Kwele Tribe (Rare)
Height: 11 1/2 x 17"
Weight: 0.94kg
Price: $380.00
| Rare mask of the Kwele tribe, a little-investigated group of northeast Gabon and the adjacent area of the Republic of Congo.
The Kwele are related to the famous Kota. Their masks represent benevolent forest spirits and danced only when the eyes were pierced. Rarely shown to onlookers, the faces are usually covered in white kaolin, associated with light and clarity, two essential factors in the fight against evil. The mask is old, with pierced eyes. It is believed to date from the middle of the 20th century. This is a deserving mask to add to a collection of Authentic African Art. |
